Should you install an over the range microhood in your kitchen that is now a venthood? Something I see all the time when designing Los Altos kitchen remodels. Installers sometimes, to avoid a wasted trip, will improperly install a microhood above a range. The cabinet above the range does not allow for the proper clearance between the microhood and range or cooktop. A microhood above an electric range should be no less than 18 inches from the cooktop. A gas range should be closer to 20 inches minimum. An improper install creates several problems for the homeowner.
Your microhood will not last as long as it should if heat from the range or steam generated by cooking damages the hood or microwave assembly. This can even affect the hardware by discoloring hinges or even melting handles. This usually leads to needing to replace the entire unit.
The inability to access tall cooking pots is also caused by this type of installation.
Probably the worst problem is when an installer does not upgrade the electrical wiring that had previously been daisy chained with outlets and the venthood. A microhood uses significantly more power than just a venthood and is required to have its own dedicated line and breaker. Failure to do so can cause a surge and a fire. Sound like fun?
When considering a microhood above the range keep in mind the people who currently may be using your countertop microwave. Children and those of us who are height challenged, possibly handicapped members of the family. An alternative is the double oven/microwave cabinet. You can also install a countertop microwave into a specialty cabinet but this usually is an extra expense that does not gain you significantly more space than a counter top install.
